Search called off for missing Boeing 777 as it is emerges that two people on board were using STOLEN PASSPORTS
An air search for the Malaysian Airlines plane that vanished off the coast of Vietnam has been called off until daylight as it emerged two passengers were travelling using stolen passports.
Two oil slicks were spotted by the Vietnamese air force earlier today, as the major search and rescue operation was launched when Flight MH307 disappeared shortly after losing contact with air traffic controllers.
The Boeing 777, with 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board, took off from Kuala Lumpur at 12.21am (4.21pm GMT) bound for Beijing, where it was expected to land at 6.30am (10.30pm GMT). Among them were three Americans, including a baby.
But after reaching 35,000ft and 120 nautical miles off the coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu the plane vanished, prompting fears the aircraft 'could have crashed'.
As Malaysian Airlines released a full list of the passengers on board - including five children aged two to four years old - it emerged two passengers were travelling on stolen passports.
Foreign ministry officials in Rome and Vienna have confirmed that names of two nationals listed on the manifest of the missing Malaysian airlines flight match passports reported stolen in Thailand.
Italy's Foreign Ministry said that an Italian man whose name was listed as being aboard is traveling in Thailand and was not aboard the plane.
A foreign ministry functionary, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed Italian reports that Luigi Maraldi had reported his passport stolen last August.
Italian news agency ANSA says Maraldi called home after hearing reports that an Italian with his name was aboard the plane.Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Weiss confirmed that a name listed on the manifest matches an Austrian passport reported stolen two years ago in Thailand. Weiss would not confirm the identity.
As the air search is abandoned over night aviation expert Chris Yates said the plane would not be carrying enough fuel to still be in the air and would 'definitely have crashed'.
He told Sky News: 'Frankly the plane would not have been carrying enough fuel to stay aloft much longer than an hour after it was due to arrive in Beijing.
'We simply don't know the circumstances behind what caused that crash at the moment.
'There will be two areas for the investigation: the maintenance of the aircraft and also possible terrorism.'Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said there has been no sign of the missing plane.
He said search operations in an area about midway between Malaysia and Vietnam's southern coast were being intensified.
It comes as the Vietnamese air force reports it has spotted two oil slicks, thought to be from the wreckage of the crash.
A Vietnamese government statement said the slicks were spotted off the southern tip of Vietnam.
They were each between six miles and nine miles long, officials said.
The statement said the slicks were consistent with the kinds that would be left by fuel from a crashed jetliner.
Less than one hour after Flight MH370 left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing, the plane disappeared from radar.
Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said there was no indication that the pilots sent a distress signal. The fact that there was apparently no call for help suggests that whatever happened to the flight occurred quickly.
The Malaysian Transport Minister said 14 hours into the search and rescue missions, that no trace of a crash site in the sea has been found, after reports the plane had crashed off the coast of southern Vietnam.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Vietnamese air force planes on Saturday spotted two large oil slicks in the area where a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 vanished earlier in the day, the first sign that the aircraft carrying 239 people -- including two Canadians -- on board had crashed.
The air force planes were part of a multinational search operation launched after Flight MH370 fell off radar screens less than an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday morning.
A Vietnamese government statement said the slicks were spotted late Saturday off the southern tip of Vietnam and were each between 10 kilometres and 15 kilometres long. There was no confirmation that the slicks were related to the missing plane, but the statement said they were consistent with the kinds that would be produced by the two fuel tanks of a crashed jetliner.

Oil spills found near site of crashed Malaysia Airlines plane
Deputy Minister of Transport Pham Quy Tieu (2nd, R) is directing the search for the crashed Malaysian plane
During the search for the Malaysia Airlines MH370 plane that crashed off Vietnam’s Tho Chu Islands this morning (local time), a Vietnamese plane has discovered two alleged oil spills near the site of crash.
At 4:26 pm Saturday (Vietnam time), an AN 26 plane found an alleged oil spill at 7.55 degrees latitude north and 103.18 degrees longitude east.
An hour later, the plane discovered another alleged oil spill about 150 km from Tho Chu Island.
The plane later left the area as it was getting dark, causing difficulties to the search.
Meanwhile, three Vietnamese vessels, including a naval ship, a coast guard boat and a rescue boat, were sailing to the site of crash.
Deputy Minister of Transport Pham Quy Tieu has been directing the search for the Malaysian plane.
So far, the search and rescue agencies of both Singapore and Malaysia said they have found no signs of the crashed plane.
The Vietnamese authorities have informed both Singapore and Malaysia about the alleged oil spills for verification.
The flight MH370 disappeared at 1:40 am local time (1840 GMT Friday), about two hours after it left Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The plane was carrying 239 people from 14 countries from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China when it crashed.
There is no reports of casualties so far.
Lai Xuan Thanh, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, said that it is an abnormal phenomenon that the Malaysian plane had not automatically sent its signals to satellites. -Tuoi Tre

Kehilangan MH370: 'Pasport curi' mungkin digunakan - The Guardian
